Frequently Asked Questions
What is Counselling or Psychotherapy?
A confidential setting for exploring difficult issues
A skilled professional offering insight and explanation when needed.
An opportunity for you to make changes in yourself and in your life.
A space to heal in body, mind and spirit.
A time to reflect and grow toward your life goals.
A chance to see clearly how you have ended up where you are and to find the way out.
A way of developing healthy relationships.
A place to stand back from your problems and understand them in a more helpful way.
Above all, as a counsellor or psychotherapist, I offer you a safe and professional relationship where we will work together to develop an understanding of what is happening for you, where it comes from, and what you can do to learn, grow and move through it in a way that enables it to become a source of strength for the future.
What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
Broadly the terms ‘counselling’, ‘therapy’ and ‘psychotherapy’ are similar and refer to the process of meeting with a professionally trained therapist to discuss and help manage personal issues.
A counsellor has specific training in counselling theory and skills as well as experience of face to face counselling. Typically counsellors conduct medium and short term work. A psychotherapist has also trained in counselling theory and skills but generally works in greater depth and thus psychotherapy is often medium to long term.

What happens at the first appointment?
This is an opportunity for you to outline the reasons that you are seeking help at this time, and to discuss any concerns you have about the counselling or psychotherapy process. We will go through an initial intake review. You will also be able to decide whether counselling or psychotherapy is right for you, and to discuss this with me. Once we have agreed a way forward, future sessions will then be booked at times and dates to suit you.
What happens if I need to cancel an appointment?
Once we have an appointment agreed, I ask for 48 hours notice of cancellation in order to be able to offer the time to someone else. If you need to cancel at shorter notice, I will try to reallocate the appointment, but if that is not possible I will charge the appointment fee for the missed session.
How many times will I need to come?
How long is a piece of string?! Each person is looking to get something unique to them from coming to counselling or psychotherapy, so the length of time you will spend resolving your issues will be up to you. Usually I will offer a guide as to whether what you want to achieve will require long or short term work, and I will discuss the options available to you.
